If you are on a tight budget and can not afford travelling to another country my best suggestion is to buy sapphires online or else search for gem dealers in your area and remember to get the gem verified with a gem lab or ask the seller for a gem certificate. Most of the time precious gems are always sold with a gem certificate.

A gem certificate will tell you the variety, dimensions, weight and if the gem is treated in any way. for example if you are buying the below sapphire from me you will receive a brief report or a certificate from a certified gem lab in Sri Lanka.

What to look for

If you are buying sapphires online, make sure the seller is authentic. You can always check for reviews of previous buyers. Also see the origin where it is shipped from . For example Sri Lankan gemstones sellers are regulated by the National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka. Any gem that is exported from Sri Lanka goes through a rigorous process to send out only the authentic gemstones.

Look for the price. What I have seen on many platforms is that you can determine the authenticity of a gem with price. If there are loupe clean stones listed for a fraction of the price then you know that it is not a authentic gemstone.

In the case of yellow sapphires, look for inclusions. Inclusions are a sure sign that the gem is authentic, If the gem is 100% clean there is no way to tell from just visual inspection the authenticity of the gem . For this you have to rely on a gem lab.

Communicate with the seller

I also suggest to communicate with the seller thoroughly before buying gems online. If its a large company with a good customer base and reviews its fine, you can go ahead and buy it from the site but beware when buying from dodgy sites.
