Are Yellow Sapphires color stable ?

The quick answer to this question is YES for majority of instances. But I warn you there are some yellow sapphires that are not color stable.

Most of the time yellow sapphires are color stable. Some may show color enhancements if kept for a few hours under direct sunlight. This is a natural phenomena and is acceptable in the gem world. Then there are some yellow sapphires which looses its color if kept under a LED light source. This also is natural but considered as a color instability . Top quality yellow sapphire does not loose its color over time under any circumstance.

As for artificial color instability, it is not acceptable in the gem world. Long exposure to certain substances and rays like x-ray can enhance the color of a yellow sapphire but this does not last a long time.

My advise to anyone new to buying yellow sapphires is to keep it under the sun light for a couple of hours. If the color decreases, then that means it is enhanced by artificial means.
